WREPNET Waterloo Region Education and Public Network
- WREPNet is now fully operational. Approximately 16,000 computers
at 251 sites are connected to a high-capacity network that is
180,000 times faster than existing telephone-based computer
networks.
- WREPNet is currently the most state-of-the-art information network
in Canada. There are no other networks with the speed, capacity,
flexibility and security of WREPNet.
- Approximately 550 kilometres of fibre optic cable is installed
to connect the 251 sites throughout Waterloo Region to WREPNet.
- The fibre optic cable is connected to 9,700 hydro poles.
- If you laid all of the individual strands contained within the
fibre optic network being installed for WREPNet, they would stretch
2,650 km.
- About 50 people worked exclusively on the installation component
of the WREPNet project. Many of these were hired because of this
project.
- The fibre optic and information technology being installed to
support WREPNet represents a $9-million investment for Atria Networks
in Waterloo Region.
